The Byzantine New Year

The Byzantine New Year

The Byzantine New Year is the event with which every year Amalfi falls into its medieval atmosphere. As usual on August 30 and September 1 with its pages, ladies and knights, which frame the coronation of the new Magister of Amalfi.

The Ancient Maritime Republic, together with the adjoining town of Atrani, is confirmed as the theater of an extraordinary historical event that takes its cue from the political greatness of the civitates to offer a carnet of high profile cultural and spectacular events. On the 31st of August and the 1st of September, in fact, Amalfi and Atrani commemorate with the Byzantine New Year the beginning of the fiscal and juridical year in the epoch of the Eastern Empire of which Amalfi was a peripheral autonomy.
